In Short: At age 13, artistic Noah and his daredevil twin sister Jude are incredibly close but also incredibly competitive. At age 16, they have practically switched souls and hardly say a word to each other. 13-year-old Noah and 16-year-old Jude tell the story of how they fell apart and how they might be put back together again.
Opinion: Love Love Love Love Love
Thoughts: I’m skipping the summary here, because nothing I can say can do this justice. I absolutely loved it. I rarely read books more than once, largely because there are so many books I have yet to read (and I’m not all that fast), but this one, I just might. I will certainly also buy a copy, even though I have an ARC. I will possibly buy a copy for all of my friends. On September 16th.
From the characters to the setting in a beautiful, coastal Northern California town to the lush language, this book is wonderful. The perspective of Noah at 13 is interwoven with Jude’s perspective three years later, and it works remarkably well, building up suspense, giving us some small hints throughout of what might have happened to them, but never giving it away until the end (or close to it). Both of the twins are artistic – Noah draws and paints, and Jude sculpts. Nelson paints stunning pictures with words, and the book had me wishing that I, too, could “wish with my hands.” I’ll Give You the Sun is a stunner, and a must-read for anyone who likes contemporary YA, and possibly even those who don’t.
